Rabbits, their teeth and maggots

Some rabbits, especially dwarfs, need regular dental check ups. Incisor and check teeth can become over-grown and need dental attention. Should a rabbit become inappetant or start drooling, dental disease & abscessation can be a common cause and the rabbit should be assessed quickly.

Sadly, especially in the summer months rabbits often fall foul of ‘fly strike’. Large flies lay eggs in the soiled faeces especially around the rear end of rabbits . When the eggs hatch into maggots the rest is as you can imagine. So check your rabbit by turning it over every day and just making sure all is well. If you are in any doubt, seek veterinary attention immediately.
